Acoustic and Electroacoustic Designer
Nigel Frayne is an Acoustic Designer and Soundscape Composer with a background as a rock musician, sound engineer, a theatre sound designer and a graduate in composition and music technology from Latrobe University. His expertise in acoustic design and electroacoustic soundscaping encompasses a unique blend of design and technical skills developed through broad experience. Nigel is director of his Melbourne based company, Resonant Designs.
Widely travelled throughout the USA, Europe and Asia as a senior designer for sound and electroacoustic soundscaping, projects have included zoos, museums, aquariums, science and exhibition centres, shopping and arts and leisure precincts.
His involvement in soundscape projects spans the full scope from inception through to post installation support and maintenance and includes a wide range of activities - acoustic and sound design, sound recording, soundscape composition, audio production, project management and technical installation and commissioning.
Nigel is a recipient of R&D and travel grants from the Australia Council and has presented at the Sound Design Symposium in Paris (2004), Acoustic Ecology conferences in the U.K. and Canada and guest presented at universities in Australia and Canada. Resonant Designs was selected by RMIT University to join its exhibition 'Hot Spots' at the 2004 Architecture Biennale in Beijing.
Nigel Frayne spent the early years of his career touring Australia as a bass player in a number of rock groups and later as a sound mixer/engineer for live music and theatre. He maintains a keen interest in electroacoustic music and the applications of computers to music through membership in the International and Australian Computer Music Associations. Nigel is actively involved in the broader issue of sound design in the environment as Chair of the Board of the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology (WFAE) and Vice-President of the Australian Forum for Acoustic Ecology (AFAE).
